The 5-step program development process

Every good program starts with a plan. Here are the five steps a professional programmer follows:

  • Define and analyze the problem — understand what you need to build
  • Design the algorithm — plan the solution step by step (flowchart / pseudocode)
  • Write the code — translate your algorithm into C++
  • Test the program — run it with known inputs and verify the output
  • Document — add comments so others (and future you) understand the code
